Check Out This Tiny Transylvania Castle

I love tiny architecture – it’s a dream of mine to eventually live in a tiny home. While scrolling Reddit today, I came across a post that about knocked me off my feet. It featured an image of what was described as a tiny Transylvania castle. I immediately had to do some research and learn a little bit more about this funky little old-world cottage.

Not actually a castle, but it feels like one

It turns out, the tiny Transylvania castle I saw is a hotel called Castelul de Lut Valea Zanelor, and is run by Razvan and Gabriela Vasile. It sits nestled inside of the “Valley of the Fairies” near the tiny village of Porumbacu De Sus, just 24 miles from the city of Sibiu. It’s remote location makes it a natural place for visitors to unwind and relax.

The Vasiles opted not to follow modern construction methods, instead going for something a bit more old-school. The hotel features 10 rooms total and was designed by Ileana Mavrodin, an environmentally conscious architect, along with the Vasiles. It was constructed by local craftsmen.

A tiny Transylvania castle built for the environment

“The exterior plastering is of lime and sand and the towers are of river stone, built with lime and sand,” explains Razvan Vasile. “Everything is made with natural materials, and the windows and doors are different, each room having its own separate entrance.”

Being an enchanting tiny Transylvania castle wasn’t the only priority for this hotel. The environment really was front and center. The hotel provides guests with a seasonal menu of local foods cooked in old fashioned ways, like in a cauldron. The menu is 100% vegetarian, which according to the website is “chosen with respect for the environment.”

I don’t expect to be in Transylvania anytime soon, or ever, probably, but if I do, I think I’ll be booking a night or two in Castelul de Lut Valea Zanelor.
