The ocean is a beautiful place. It’s great to take a walk on the beach, clear your head a little, and relax in the sun. But the ocean can also be a wild, dangerous, and creepy place too. In eastern Australia, along beaches in New South Wales and Queensland, a thick layer of sea foam has been washing ashore.
At a glance, the sea foam doesn’t look all that threatening. It actually looks kind of fun and fluffy. Some have taken to Instagram to record video and images of themselves playing in the foam. But officials are warning locals to stay away.
The stormy waters that have pushed the sea foam ashore are also pushing other things ashore, like debris and pollutants.
“There’s been trees and things like that have washed up.” Nathan Fife, the lifesaving services supervisor at Surf Lifesaving Australia, told Guardian Australia. |I think there was half a cow that washed up at the beach yesterday, so make sure what’s in front of you — there are trees and logs floating around, so please be careful.”
Fife warns that the foam may not be healthy.
“Health-wise it’s probably not great to let your kids play in it,” said Fife. “Also the marine creatures that might get in it, like sea snakes.”
Among the things potentially lurking in the sea foam? Snakes. Alongside various debris and pollutants, sea snakes are likely being pushed ashore as well. Some of these sea snakes may be venomous to humans, so being extra careful in the foam is advisable.
Visitors should also be careful of their pets. A dog named Hazel was lost and later rescued from the sea foam in Byron Bay, Australia, according to a tweet from BBC Weather.
So if you plan to go and experience this foamy event at a local beach, be extremely careful, enjoy from a distance, and if you can, leave the kids and pets at home.
