Energy production is a tough thing to get right. Each source of electricity has drawbacks, including solar power. One of the main critiques points to its massive surface area requirements taking up countless acres of land that could otherwise be wild. But one big pro to solar power is its ability to be placed on the rooftops of existing structures that have other uses.
And that’s what New Jersey’s largest solar owner and operator decided to do on its storage facilities. Solar Landscape finished the 800,000 square foot array on August 1st, bringing online enough energy to power 1,400 homes. The installation is one of 46 community projects approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
“Partnering with Solar Landscape on this project aligns perfectly with our commitments to be good corporate citizens and to participate in environmental initiatives that are positive for our communities, customers, employees, and shareholders,” said McKall Morris, NJBPU Manager of Communications and Sustainability.
New Jersey’s Community Solar Energy Pilot Program allows residents to subscribe to community solar projects near them and purchase the electricity at a discounted rate. This program extends access to renewable energy to individuals who might not otherwise be able to install solar panels due to the high cost, shade, or not owning their home. The projects help remove some of the most common roadblocks.
“The promise of community solar in New Jersey has arrived, and it’s bringing guaranteed savings to residents at a time when many other costs are increasing,” said Shaun Keegan, CEO of Solar Landscapes. “We’re proud to be partnering with Extra Space Storage on this project, which connects business leaders with the local community and saves residents money.”
Solar Landscape has awarded $20,000 to high school seniors through its Community Sustainability Challenge scholarships.
Around the world, renewable energy is picking up steam in part due to policies by China and the European Union that encourage the construction of large-scale projects. Solar power is expected to account for 60% of the increase in global renewable capacity this year, bringing the total amount of energy produced to over 300 gigawatts.
