What we do

We give a shit about nature. And we think understanding the wildlife around you should be a hell of a lot easier than it is.

Wildlife advice on the internet is a mess. Coyotes are supposedly out to eat your pets. Every baby bird on the ground needs rescuing. Bats are terrifying. Bug zappers are a great way to control mosquitoes.

Some of this stuff is flat-out wrong. Some is exaggerated. And plenty of it gets repeated so often that people stop questioning it.

We started Give A Shit About Nature on X to push back on all that. We’d take a common wildlife myth, dig into the research, and explain what was actually going on. People kept sharing our posts, asking questions, and wanting to learn more.

So we built this site. Our approach is simple: we read the research so you don’t have to.

Here’s what you’ll find

Research first, then the answer.

Every article starts with the studies, wildlife agencies and field biologists, not with the headline we want. We tell you what the science shows, what it can’t prove, and where experts disagree.

Deep, not shallow.

We’d rather give you the full explanation than a listicle. You get the why behind the advice, so you can handle the next situation too, not just this one.

Found an animal? Here’s what to do.

A baby bird in your yard. A turtle crossing the road. A bat that somehow got into your house. We’ll help you figure out what to do, what not to do, and when the best thing you can do is leave an animal alone.

Make your yard a little wilder.

You don’t need 40 acres or a degree in ecology to help wildlife. We’ll show you how to make your own patch of the planet more welcoming to birds, bees, butterflies, and everything else trying to survive out there.

We show our work.

We link to the research, check claims against credible sources, and try to be upfront about what scientists know and what they’re still figuring out. Every article ends with its sources.

We’re not going to tell you an animal is dangerous just to get you to click. We’re also not going to pretend something is harmless when it isn’t.

The science comes first. The writing is there to make you care. And when we get something wrong, we’ll own it and fix it.

At the end of the day, we want more people to understand, appreciate, and give a shit about the wildlife around them.

Because the more you know about nature, the harder it is not to care about what happens to it.
