Backyard Birds
Feeders, window strikes, nest boxes, hummingbirds, owls. How to help the birds in your yard without screwing it up.
Feeders, windows, and what birds need
Most of what goes wrong for backyard birds is fixable, and most of what people worry about is not the real problem.
Feeding is the place to start. A study found that feeding does not make birds dependent on you, and feeders genuinely help birds get through the coldest weather. The details still matter. Bread fills a bird’s stomach and gives it almost nothing nutritionally, rats at a feeder are a management problem and not a personal failure, and hummingbird feeders have their own timing and bee problems.
Plants are part of the answer too. If you want hummingbirds, bluebirds, cardinals, or owls, the articles here cover what each one actually needs to stay.
The biggest avoidable risk is glass. Windows kill a staggering number of birds every year, and there are simple fixes. The same goes for the other common hazards, including neglected feeders, outdoor cats, discarded fishing line, and rodenticides that end up killing the raptors that would have eaten the rodents.
The last group answers questions people actually search. Do crows eat other birds? Do hawks hunt at night? Which birds eat wasps? Each one gets a direct answer and linked sources, so you can see what the research and wildlife agencies actually say.
